Listen to The Written Word

It was just a few days before my birthday on April 17th when the bomb-shell landed.  Actually it was more like fireworks, with benign explosive impact and amazing super good news!

March 30th1965 Vietcong set off a massive explosion that tore off the side off the American Embassy in Saigon.

Monday, May 24th to Friday, May 28th, 1965
Washington D.C.

  1. Monday, May 24, “1965,” I learn that I’m going to be stationed in Saigon, Vietnam – everyone gets a big laugh.
  2. The next day I go to the big Liston vs Cassius Clay, (now Mohamed Ali) Fight Tuesday, May 25th, 1965 – at a basketball court/stadium in D.C. shown on super large close circuit tv monitors
  3. Thursday, June 17th it’s to the then D.C. offices of the National Security Agency for a farewell treat at the NSA museum – Pull microphone from the Cardinal’s attic apartment in the US Embassy, etc.
    • microphones built into building’s walls
    • Make sure you close Venetian blinds … the window’s glass vibrations can be picked up with a directional and amplified microphone.
    • Safe Rooms in the basement of all embassy’s clear plexiglass suspended above the floor on isolating vibration absorbers.
    • A quick tour of 007-like gadgets
    • The microphone was lowered down the chimney in the Warsaw Embassy room where the Catholic Cardinal was living while Poland was part of the Soviet Union.
      • Tug of war … and we WON!
